Desktop for Linux
Install the org desktop app on Linux, and use the global capture hotkey.
The desktop app is org in its own window, plus what a browser can't do: a capture hotkey that works from any app, a tray icon with today's count, native notifications, folder sync, and running code blocks from your pages. It's built for Linux; macOS is coming later.
Install
Download the latest release from GitHub releases (external), in the format that suits your distribution.
AppImage (any distribution):
chmod +x aegent_0.1.0_amd64.AppImage && ./aegent_0.1.0_amd64.AppImage
Debian and Ubuntu:
sudo apt install ./aegent_0.1.0_amd64.deb
Fedora and openSUSE:
sudo dnf install ./aegent-0.1.0-1.x86_64.rpm
Arch (from the AUR):
yay -S aegent-desktop-bin
The app needs WebKitGTK 4.1, which the packages pull in. It updates itself when a new version is out.
Open the app and sign in as you would on the web. It connects to aegent.dev by default; to use another server, change it in Settings, Desktop app.
Capture from anywhere
Press Super Shift Space in any app to open the capture box, type a task in plain words ("Book MOT next Tuesday #car") and press Enter. It goes to your inbox, or wherever the capture template says.
Change the hotkey in Settings, Desktop app. On Wayland, the app asks your desktop to register it through the global shortcuts portal, and your desktop may ask you to confirm; on X11 it grabs the key directly. If another app already uses the combination, the settings page says so.
You can also capture from the tray icon's Capture… item, or with a link:
aegent://capture?title=Book%20MOT&body=Garage%20on%20Mill%20Lane
Also in the app
- Notifications with Done, Snooze and Open buttons.
- Folder sync built in: pick a folder in Settings, Desktop app. It
works as
ae org syncdoes. - Idle detection: if you leave a clock running and step away for ten minutes, it asks whether to keep the time, subtract the idle time, or stop the clock when you left.
- Offline: pages you've opened stay editable offline, and sync when you're back.
- Open at login, from the settings.
